Designing web pages to best suit
all screens is a task with no simple solution. When the
web started 640 x 480 was the default setting for most new machines.
Gradually 800 x 640 became the default and our web pages were
widened to take advantage of this. For several years now 1024
x 768 (or greater) has become the standard for new screens, both
traditional and LCD. So our web pages have widened again.
However some are, of course, still
using older 800 x 640 screens. The problem is, should we aim
for a setting that best suits the majority or what best suits
what now must be a declining minority ? If the latter, when do
we change ? Must we wait until the very last 800 x 640 user upgrades
? If so, how will we know ? So our practice has been to move
as screen technology has progressed. This does unfortunately,
mean that some will have to scroll horizontally.
